Obtain the child's cooperation; put him to a position that minimize the body rigidity and abnormal activity. Hold his limb and gently pull back and forth with an increasing action extent of the joint. The movement should be very slow and slight, and avoid the cause of any pain and fear on the kid.
Ankle traction should be started from holding the side of the heels and knees. Slowly flex the ankle and protect the joint, do not drag the foot to any diverted side.
Some muscle spans two joint, e.g. gastrocnemius expands beyond knee and ankle joint. If the gastrocnemius contracts too much and pulls one joints, the other one may become rigid and add difficulty to the heel area flexation. Therefore, the knee and heel should be traced synchronizingly so as to tract the whole part of gastrocnemius and help the feet stand evenly in correct posture.
